Others attempt to turn off their tormenting voices with meditation, drugs, or dangerous activities, but those methods are also temporary, only partly effective, and may have many problematic consequences.

In fact, what someone said may be primarily—or even entirely—in response to their own frustration or difficulty in responding to what just happened, or what they imagine would happen in the future as a result. “Oh, that was just after he lost his job, and he didn’t know if he would be able to get another. ” How How were you speaking, and how were you acting at the moment that your voice is commenting on? How were you feeling at that moment, and how were other people feeling and acting? “How” includes all the different aspects of process—how the “what” is happening.

For instance, if a mother yells at her daughter, that behavior is unpleasant for both of them, and it can seem as if the mother hates the daughter. But understood in the light of the mother’s positive intent to protect the daughter from danger, the same behavior takes on an entirely new meaning.
